I counted down the days.. eagerly checking back on the Jamie Oliver website… and finally, opening day arrived. I read the menu thoroughly, pre-selected my meal as soon as it was published (and changed my mind several times of course) – however alas, it wasn’t until the second day of opening that I managed to get a bunch of friends to go out with me on a weeknight! Well thank you to those friends, I had a terrific evening! We made a booking (you can only book for 6 or more) at 6pm and I ran ahead of my group until I saw that glass front that declared its presence in gold font. Jamie’s Italian!! Now in Sydney!!! I was lucky enough to go in London in 2010 and I knew that I could expect a good meal at a very good price.

Right out the front, as per its UK sisters, you pass by the hand made pasta machine and produce – it’s made fresh daily!

Even in Sydney, the decor is like I stepped back to Canary Wharf – the furniture the same, the tea towel napkins the same – the chain completely consistent and like it was plucked straight out of the UK !

I loved this graffiti wall. In fact, there are a few spray paintings around the place that create a funky urban uber cool environment.

We were seriously lucky to score the table right next to the open kitchen. Shouts of “yes chef!” and high energy cooking happening in there – the head chef keeping a watchful eye and cleaning dishes as they went out. He was also so kind to respond to my questions of “Whats that?” “what’s that?” – you know, sneaking a look of what food looked like before I had to committ! haha.

We finally ordered after a final check of the menu. And promptly, out came two little pails of complimentary bread. Who offers free bread these days?? The sourdough, pita, grissini and house baked foccacia was drizzled with pesto and served with balsamic and olive oil. Definitely could have wolfed more of this down!

What was a soda? For $4.10 I had to find out. It was lemongrass and ginger cordial topped with sparkling water. It certainly did have a kick to it! I couldn’ really taste the lemongrass though, but it was otherwise like a nice refreshing ginger ale.

I had to order the arancini – as I did in London, and again, it could have been air freighted over as it looked exactly the same! A dreamy dusting of parmesan on top and house made tomato sauce accompanied it. There were 3 balls – for $9.50. They were crispy on the outside but I found the balls to be slightly dry in the middle – and I thought that for that price maybe a 4th ball could have been offered instead of putting paper in the bottom – or at least making all 3 balls the same size instead of giving 1 that was smaller than the others (the back one).

These were the Italian nachos – deep fried pillows of ricotta ravioli. We watched the girls hand make these out the front!

And the calamari with garlic mayo – $12. It was more a tapas size than an entree size. Really garlicky and awesome flavour – again, a little more would be better – or charge a bit more and get a bit more? It wasn’t really enough to share, more like a side dish.

And the meat board for one. Just like in London served on a wooden plank balanced on tinned tomatoes as a stand, there was mix of meats and some pickles and salad. Bonus points for allowing single person serves! At $13, I thought this was good value.1

Being the start of spring swimming costume season, the girls decided that we should go for entree sized pastas instead of having a main sized pasta – all those carbs at night need to be worked off right? I was happy with the serving size of mine – the slow cooked cuttlefish. All the pastas are handmade and were so fresh – yet still able to have that al dente texture. I have to say that I haven’t had cuttlefish before, and it smelled and tasted a little fishy for my liking. I loved the sauce though – rich with olive oil and stock ($13.50 for entree size).

Next time though, I will definitely definitely be going for the mushroom ravioli. Don’t feel sorry for vegos here because here they feast! Even the bread crumbs look meaty! And great value too.

I have had boar just twice. Once at the Spitalfields markets and the other time at Spiedo – Alessandro Pavioni’s new digs at Westfield Sydney. And here is the second place I’ve heard of in Sydney that has it. Wild boar sausage with lentils. I have to say that at $22, maybe a bit more sausage could have been offered, but what it lacked in size it made up for in flavour. Very Jamie style!

The sides were very well priced – this crunchy salad was $5.50 and was a beautiful mix of red and yellow beetroot, radish and carrot with lemon and mint dressing. It lacked seasoning a bit so I just added my own and also some of the olive oil/balsamic from the bread. It’s approximately the size of a typical rice bowl.

The absolute stand out dish for me that you must must MUST MUST try (get the picture? ) one of – per person that is!!! – is the polenta chips. WOW. Crispy on the outside, well seasoned and soft on the inside. I’m sure that if I drank beer these would be an awesome snack. The best I’ve ever eaten!!

Well Jamie’s Italian, Sydney certainly did live up to my expectations. It really took me back to my holiday and felt like we were enjoying something that Jamie himself created and would be proud of. It was so much like the other restaurants – but I don’t say that in a bad chain way – but in a reliably good way. I certainly will be back.

Ever since appearing on Italian Food Safari and seeing the real way to make amazing Spaghetti Vongole I have been dying to try this place. I knew it was a cosy little restaurant centred around a communal table, and I also knew that it is seriously popular. Both I found to be true when I visited! The large marble communal table is in fact the very bench where the chef makes handmade pasta daily as we are told by the waiter. In fact, it is so produce driven that there are only a few permanent menu items, printed on a piece of paper and tucked neatly into your napkin. The rest – actually, most of the menu, is repeated and described individually to everyone by the poor waiter. It was strange actually, bcos the specials menu was actually quite a bit more expensive than the regular menu, strange given that I would have thought that in season food would be cheaper to source. The regular menu is more Italian cucina pricing whilst the specials is more your fine dining ($35+ for mains). So we hedged our bets, obviously!

When you are seated, you are presented with some fresh made foccacia and chilli oil for dipping. Nice. The bread is so soft and fluffy with a just lightly crispy crust with a slight oily texture to the touch. The chilli oil could have done with a bit more of a kick for my liking, but that’s just me, and would most probably have masked the bread!

So for entrees, I had the salami entree. It was $14, and I was a bit disappointed with its simplicity. Three slices of salami lightly fried served on a bed of polenta. A bit more polenta would have been great – or at least another carb provided or even a veg, as the salami is very full bodied and salty to have on its own.

What I should have gotten was the scallops from the specials menu, served with roasted baby beets including my new favourite thing – heirloom varieties, so pretty! The dish was scattered with pomegranite seeds and served with rocket. Good to have the balance of veges, and you have to agree – such a pretty plating up, which contrasts to the rustic simplicity of the normal menu. Are you getting the contrast? The scallops would not look out of place at a three hat restaurant!

For mains – we only had two courses each because we were in a hurry for the theatre – again , a tale of two menus! I chose the ragu which I was informed was veal, pork and chicken. Yum. I was confused as this arrived in front of me – the meat was minced instead of slow cooked chunks It was a HUGE serving! Yum though! But as I continued to eat it, it sat in a pool of red oil – it certainly wasn’t low fat… probably a bit too much oil that perhap could have been better off integrated into the sauce so that it doesn’t split out. Having said that, the pasta was cooked perfectly.

And once again, food envy – as my friend’s lamb ragu was exactly what I expected mine to be like!! Melt in your mouth lamb chunks stirred through delicate thin ribbons of hand made parpadelle!!

I guess what you get for an extra $10 is hand made pasta and also real tender meat. :( I was really really surprised though, I would have expected the regular menu to be better! I hesitate to want to pay $34 for a pasta dish though. In short, if you do go, do yourself a favour and go for the specials menu which is ironically better than the regular menu.

OK I said I would update on my progress of eating there, I’m sorry I missed bringing my camera on visits number 3 and 4 hehehe. On visit 3 I had breakfast. I was really disappointed because I was soo excited about trying the breakfast calzone. It was pale and dry, and mostly spinach with not much meat or mushrooms or cheese to speak of, and really small. But I guess I am used to gluttinously huge portions of breakfast, and at only $10, I couldn’t really complain much! On visit 4, I had a gigantic delicious fluffy pillow of jam donut filled with raspberry deliciousness and calories. Coffee was hot. Good, yum. And all this while, eyeing off people eating wood fired pizzas (for breakfast and afternoon tea??). So it was finally my turn. On Saturday night 7pm, I guess the word has spread, because I didn’t book (as I didn’t any other time), and it was full and my companion and I were relegated to a bench counter to eat. Boo Oh well. The food came so quickly and it was SO good!! The wood fired pizza tasted every bit as good as it looked. And not to mention – huge too! And it came so quickly. It’s delivered so dramatically on a wooden pizza paddle and perches on top of a stand. Careful when fighting to grab the first piece, lest the pizza take a topple! I wonder if that’s happened yet We loved the crisp base, the generous tomato base and just the right amount of toppings. The crust had a good bite too. I’m thinking that my trips to Haberfield for good pizza may be limited in future

We also tried the crab linguine, main sized. I thought it could be a bit bigger, but otherwise it was nice – the pasta cooked al dente, fragrant olive oil and not stingy on the crab. It was especially nice with the chilli oil that was offered to us.

I’m please to advise that the cool rooms are now filled with all sorts of goodies now. Great fresh produce – what a colourful display! I was hoping there would be some exotic goodies like heirloom tomatoes but alas they were just mandarins

If you like cheese, this could be heaven for you to be locked up in the cheese room!

Some ready made frozen pastas too. But one thing I did not like in there was some gyoza! Hello! Japanese food in an Italian cafe?? There are ssoooo many Korean shops in Strathfield, I think that one Italian shop could remain pure please

And as predicted, the hooks above the deli counter, now have meats and smallgoods hanging for you to drool over..

It is WELL and TRULY winter in Sydney! The temperature can be in the single digits even during the day – and I am soon going to be dragging out my heater – I’ve done so well so far, as most of my friends have succumbed!! Winter food means slow cooked, warming your home and your heart. And red wine of course I just made a huge batch of slow cooked beef ragout, it’s so easy, as you just prepare it and leave it on the stove or in the oven and forget about it! First, I took 500g of chuck steak and cut it into little pieces. I browned off the beef in some olive oil, then added diced carrot and celery and onion, and three cloves of garlic. When the veges were almost soft, I poured in a cup of red wine and let the water evaporate. Chuck in a few bayleaves, basil and oregano, and a 700mL bottle of passata. I also added a beef stock cube. Cover, boil on low for an hour. Snuggle up with a magazine and hot chocolate in the meantime

When it’s done, I should have made my own pasta, but I was too hungry and lazy, so I just used spaghetti. I drizzled it with truffle oil for a special luxurious touch, and served with parsley There’s so much left for my freezer for a few more dinners

Hot off the press!!!! Coffee Warehouse Cafe & Deli (CWCD for short) has JUST opened TODAY!!! Driving by this site formerly a motorcycle shop, I was soooo excited to see that it was a proposed coffee ROASTER, warehouse, cafe and providore – 4 in 1 of my favourite things!!! Many a time I drove by, wistfully waiting for opening day. I thought that day approached when I saw the ad in Seek for the head chef. But alas, more days passed before the paper went up behind the glass facade and then such a tease – the “opening soon” sign!! And FINALLY this day has come! I saw movement there last week and called up Caffe di Stefano and said they were opening today. I made sure I was there. It was definitely a low key opening – only locals in the know would find out about it! Just a bunch of balloons at the entrance, and signs of life, as opposed to most of the surrounding Parramatta Road area which is derelict! The first sight you see is the pizza bar – wood fired of course. Serving as a takeaway, and provider of freshly baked super thinly authentic pizzas for the restaurant.

The restaurant itself is a wide open warehouse space on ground level, and a mezzanine level. A number of very large communal tables made of polished timber are surrounded by trendy stainless steel chairs. A bar runs along the length of the window for gazing out into the street – or for me to sit and read my paper as I intend to, every single weekend for the rest of my life There are also tables of four as well. Well , not time to eat yet – so I browsed around the shop. It wasn’t so huge, but the offerings were quality. Fresh italian crusty bread in every shape you would need for your weekend gourmet table, and at VERY reasonable prices.

The deli has a wide variety of salumi and other meats, as well as anti pasti. Judging by the hooks above it, I am guessing that some lovely legs of proscuitto may soon arrive

Some yummy meat to go?

And for cheese buffs – there is also a climate and humidity controlled room!!!! Two in fact! I think they are still to stock, it is opening day after all

And its unique drawcard – the roasting facility. Shiny, spanking new in red, and enclosed in a glass room for all to watch. If you want to make your own blend, you can – if you want 50kgs minimum that is!

I had lunch plans… but gee it certainly was hard to resist the sweets on offer there they looked so fresh they might as well have come from nonna’s oven that day. Tick to resisting temptation

Although I did have to have a drink. What’s the point of going to a coffee roaster and warehouse if I don’t sample their namesake? I had a skim mocha. It was only $3.50. And believe me, it was GOOD. So smooth down your throat and not harsh or bitter or burnt at all like some coffees!

Well, I had had a taste. I wanted more. So I went back that night for dessert! First up – skim hot choc. Not bad. But i asked for more chocolate as it tasted of warm milk.

For dessert – the most inexpensive creme brulee ever – only $8! Perfect sugary crust, and served generously with four slices of fresh made biscotti. Sorry that the custard still didn’t beat my gold standard of best ever creme brulee (the Sheraton on the Park buffet one) – but hey, it’s opening day! There’s still time to perfect it!

I looked longingly at the plates of pizza and pasta going by – sad that I had had dinner already But…. sad no more, because as I lifted my eyes, this giant mamma of a plate came at me! Wow!!! Italian waffles, the special – only $9!!! TWO waffles served with hazelnut gelato and whipped cream.

But wait – there’s more – sandwiched between them were two further scoops of gelato – chocolate and Italian vanilla! Where in town do you get even just 3 scoops of gelato for that price, let alone waffles!!! I was informed by the manager that the waffles are made by an Italian lady daily. Let me say that the chocolate gelato was to die for. It was dark and rich and I could say that it was probably made with the best quality chocolate money could buy.

This place has so much promise. I really look forward to trying more things and keeping you up to date!

I really wish someone would breed a pork species which had a fat free pork belly. Because it’s a weakness of mine – crunch crackling atop layers of soft stringy white meat interspersed with smooth fat. Alas. Pork belly makes my belly porky too. And so it is reserved only for auspicious occasions. Well there wasn’t really one this time, but a girly cooking session. I dragged out a recipe from my Australian Gourmet Traveller Magazine. It certainly looked simple enough, but I wasn’t sure whether it would have enough flavour. Silly me. Pork belly needs no flavouring! Such a simple recipe, but it’s basically 1kg of pork belly. Rub it with one tablespoon each of chopped rosemary and chopped fennel seeds (on top and on bottom). Put in an oven preheated to 240 degrees celcius. Cook for 30mins, then turn oven down to 180 degrees and cook for another 30mins. Sorry but I have no idea how to translate that time into a different meat quantity because I tell you, it just came out PERFECTLY. Okay maybe there were some slightly chewy skin bits, but overall – the flavour had subtly scented the meat; and the fat had rendered ever so slightly to keep the flesh moist – and meld with the flavours to create pan juices to pour over the sliced meat. Needless to say, it needs to be rested for 10 mins before serving. We got 4 servings out of this 1kg. Adjust accordingly for different apetites. No salt, no oil, just those three simple ingredients.

I first came across this italian eatery and delicatessen when we held a function at the Waterside, Homebush Bay, and someone came in with these amazing woodfired pizzas. Crispy thin base, and with topped with fresh ingredients to savour the base and not piled one inch high like some pizza joints these days. So on another sunny birthday day off (why do they only come once a year?), we set out to find this pizza again. It’s actually in a little piazza hidden away between the apartment blocks – I’m sure the locals would like to keep their secret to themselves! I’m torn – do I shop first, or eat first?? Well stomach won as usual, and we sat ourselves at one of the tables on the street – strangely enough, all enclosed in a plastic awning despite being a gorgeous day.

I had to have a taste of the pizza again – from a plate not a takeaway box, and it did not disappoint. For lunch, there is only a limited specials menu, and I selected the salamari, olive and chilli pizza ($15). Just enough for one person – the base was as crispy as I remembered – not merely the vessel for a mountain of topping, but as much as star as the toppings itself – which complemented it, not over powered it, the real way it’s meant to be done. None of the processed plastic cheese either – real slices of mozarella melted into the fresh tomato base, and scattered with just enough salty salamari and torn olives. The review on Sydney Morning Herald recommended the calamari fritti ($16) which my friend ordered – and I reluctantly swapped a slice of my pizza to try. It wasn’t the oily greasy rubber bands that I expected (who am I to disagree with Simon Thomsen!)- but the flash fried, and ever so slightly battered rings were much lighter than most versions, and served with chips and salad.

A stroll around the well stocked gourmet store after lunch uncovered such treasures as tri-coloured egg pasta, a fresh baked bread wall, and other imported goodies such as the extensive oil and vinegar selection.

Viscontini also has its own wine room – and many varieties of imported water for the non-drinkers. I’ll certainly be back to try some of the other things on the menu – panini; salads; and the amazing looking antipasti platter that others enjoyed after we had already ordered – d’oh! The breakfast menu with eggs done all ways, waffles, and omelettes (all under $16.50) sounds like a good next choice too.

Very pleasantly surprised at the Italian offering from the Nick’s group (Nick’s Seafood/Bar and Grill/Bondi Beach/I’m Angus). I’m a fan of I’m Angus but wondered what steak and italian had in common! Well I thought I should make my way through the chain… At the quieter end of King Street Wharf, it’s a cosy waterside location, with wooden decor and open kitchen - centered around the wood fired oven. Out of which come some pretty amazing pizzas – thin and crispy base, with fluffy bubbled crunchy but still with bite crust. The Capricciosa ($23) would make a nonna proud with not too much topping of smoked ham, mushrooms, tomatoes, artichokes and scattered with olives

My sister raves about its version of the vegetarian lasagna ($24). It could fool any carnivore – tuck into it and see if you can finish the rich slab of layered zuchchini, spinach, mushroom, eggplant and cheese, lovingly adorned with shaved parmesan and fresh parsley. Not over powering, but nevertheless an efforto finish it all due to the sheer size of the thing! Other pastas include carbonara ($24), ragtoni with salami, capsicum, asparagus, walnuts and gorgonzola ($25), and risottos ($34) of chicken and mushroom (below) or seafood.

We also tried the fettucine ai Gamberi – fresh king prawns, garlic, basil and chilli in tomato sauce ($29.50). The prawns were unreal – plump and fresh, and plenty of them – although personally I prefer thinner fettucine. Again – huge serving and couldn’t finish… the sauce was satisfying and not too brothy but not too thick either. Strange pricing structure though where seafood pastas cost only little more than non-seafood ones!

The seafood platter for two ($85) wowed everyone – an impressive crustacean tower comprising wood fired scampi, balmain bugs and king prawns, sitting on a bed of tasty marinated octopus, mussels and vongole done in garlic, chilli and olive oil. We LOVED the variation on bread - crispy garlicky garlic naan to scare the vampires away. I would have loved some chips with this, but oh well – as if there wasn’t enough carbs in the pasta/pizza! Dad didn’t find the seafood that fresh though – maybe because we went on a monday night - or was it Friday that you’re not meant to have seafood??

The special of the day included a half dozen scallops done three ways – garlic butter, thai style, and with chilli salsa ($24). With only one of us able to squeeze in any more food…dessert was an affogato served in a martini glass. Bargain basement price of $4 (as are all the other coffees). To quote Arnie – I’ll be back. Perhaps to try the Monday or Tuesday all you can eat pasta of $15 per person.

I finally got to try this Sydney icon Italian Restaurant idyllically located a stone’s throw from Russell Crowe’s apartment on Cowper Wharf Road (a.k.a. the finger wharf) in Woolloomooloo (bonus points if you can spell it without looking!). It’s a Sydney institution and a highly sought after booking - evidenced by the hoards of good looking people dining there at the same time as us. (Former) owner Alan Jones cruised in halfway through our meal somewhat unnoticed – I’m afraid he’s going to take a back seat to the food. I had the scallops for my entree – four plump scallops, seared and served on a bed of white asparagus puree, with fennel and blood oranges scattered across, drizzled with a Campari and blood orange dressing. The wagyu carpaccio with truffle dressing, baby capers and rocket looked a work of art too good to eat – wafer thin slicse of tender beef spread over the plate with maximum visual appeal.

I have learned my lesson not to do entree and main with pasta as my entree, so I had an entree sized pasta as my main in order to fit in dessert. Again my favourite scallops spaghettini, spanner crab meat, lemon in a sauce of shellfish tomato brodo. Personally I would have preferred a sauce that was either more saucy or more dressing like. This was in between like a broth, which certainly was tasty though! I didn’t try the duck breast stuffed with apple, walnuts and wrapped in proscuitto came also with the leg – fall off the bone meat, in a rich jus on a bed of sauteed red cabbage.

I can’t decide what was the highlight – my entree or my dessert! I couldn’t go past the warm Valrohna chocolate pudding with honey comb ice cream – a cakey crust that oozed the liquid gold – into the other gold – the shards of honeycomb and the (slightly melted) scoop of honey comb ice cream – amazing. Not good for the diet, cholesterol, blood sugar or any other health indicator!

The rustic looking rhubarb crumble tart was served on its own with your waiter dramatically drizzling the syrup on top to finish – well neither of us could finish our desserts due to their huge servings, but contentedly sat back to enjoy the people watching which comes for free.
